Will the new Community Family Health Centres have an adverse effect on the Meaford Hospital?

No!  In fact, the new Physicians who practice in the medical clinics will contribute their services to, and enhance the viability of the Meaford Hospital.  The services offered through the centres will help the hospital to focus on providing the complex care that can only be provided in a hospital setting.

Why is the first health centre being built in Thornbury rather than Meaford?

The existing clinic in Thornbury is struggling to function in its current space and it is not viable to try to expand this facility for new physician growth.  Two physicians in Clarksburg retired in late 2007.

Doctors are changing their practice patterns to one that will support increased quality of both personal and work life, and in most instances, two doctors will be required to assume the number of patients formerly cared for by one.

The population growth in The Blue Mountains is greater than Meaford at the present time.

Do we know how many people are without doctors in the area?

It was estimated over 2,000 people are without a Family Physician.  We have good reason to believe that this is just the tip of the iceberg, and we must also add in the recent population growth in our area.  New data indicates that the 55+ population in our area is expected to increase by more than 40 per cent over the next 10 years.

Can you guarantee that we will get new doctors if we put money into a health centre building?

There are no guarantees that we will get new doctors if we build health care centres. What we do know is that we are unlikely to be seriously considered by new doctors if we do not have a new health care centre.  Also, we know that if we do not have a centre available in the next two years, we may not keep the doctors we do have.  Neighbouring communities such as Wasaga Beach, Southampton and Hanover have attracted new doctors once they had an up-to-date, fully operational health centre for doctors to work in.  We can only assume that we will have the same positive experience over time.

I already have a family doctor.  Why do I need to give?

Your gift will support additional physicians to work in the hospital and the nursing homes and therefore, sustain these facilities so they are there when you need them.  Your own doctor is also more likely to continue providing care if the workload is shared.

Why should I give - my doctor is in Collingwood and I don't need to go to Meaford Hospital.

The availability of essential services is a critical part of the success of growing communities like Meaford and the Town of The Blue Mountains.  If we are able to provide adequate health services to our communities, we are more likely to see continued growth and employment.  This benefits everyone living here, whether you have a family doctor or not.
